NSERC Discovery Grant research program

The FRESH NSERC Discovery Grant base-funding program for integrated sustainable forest management, forest-sector systems modelling, ecosystem-service decision support, open research software, and trainee projects.

NSERC Discovery Grants provide base funding for a PI research program. In FRESH, this grant supports the lab platform behind many connected modelling, software, thesis, and partnership projects rather than a single stand-alone study.

The FRESH Discovery Grant research program develops open, scalable, and reusable modelling tools for integrated sustainable forest management and forest-sector supply-chain capacity planning.

The program focuses on systems-analysis methods that link forest ecosystem planning, industrial fibre procurement, processing-capacity decisions, logistics, carbon, and ecosystem-service outcomes in a common decision-support framework.

Core methodological work includes spatially explicit harvest and road-construction optimization, forest-sector supply-chain optimization, soft- and hard-linked model formulations, hybrid simulation-optimization, carbon modelling, tradeoff analysis, and open research software built around ws3 and related tools.

The related-project links below are intentionally broad: each listed project has received some direct or indirect support from the Discovery Grant base-funding platform, such as trainee time, software infrastructure, modelling methods, reusable data workflows, supervision, or research-program continuity. Other partner grants and contracts may also be primary funding sources for those projects.
